Bhim Rao among his fourteen brothers and sisters got admission in high
school. His original surname was sakpal but when his father registered his name
in school, he mentioned his surname as “Ambadavekar”. It represents that they
belong to the village “Ambadave”. In school records, a Brahmin teacher named
Krishan Keshav Ambedkar changed his surname to Ambedkar as his own.
Ambedkar
was born in a low caste “Mahar”. At that time, this caste was treat very
unfairly and untouchable. When the students from this caste went to school,
they were not allowed to sit in the classroom. Even, they were not allowed to
touch the water and the vessels in the school. If they want to drink water, a
person from the higher caste or the peon pour the water from a height. Baba
Saheb Ambedkar mentioned this situation of his caste in his writings “No Peon,
No Water”.
